Apart from my work as a performer and composer, I am currently undertaking research into microtuning systems. I am endeavouring to create a music form that is highly resonant due to the application of precise but variable frequency relationships to the intonation of all notes in a set of works.
I have entitled my project:
“The Search for the Lost Chord” – applying a dynamically variable Just Intonation process to the composition of digitally generated musical works and performance by string ensemble.
The project explores the development of a dynamically variable twelve-note Just Intonation microtuning system and its application to composition and performance for strings and digital instruments. Due to inherent mathematical conflicts concerning fundamental note frequencies and their resultant imperfect ratios when shifting keys, an adaptive microtuning system will be devised to address issues of dissonance due to modulation. This system will be applied to a set of musical works in three formats: a. digitally generated; b. works scored as a hybrid of digitally generated sounds together with small string ensemble and c. works scored solely for small string ensemble using a dynamically variable Just Intonation system.
Further information will be posted shortly.
